My Approach
Here is a 10 minute section of my last meeting as a commissioner where I was advocating that Commissioner Eilert be appointed as Chairman of the Transportation Cooperation Council. I had only the justness of my request and the judgement of my colleagues available to succeed.

Commentary
A County Chairman who can effectively bring the community together is not about bigger government. It is about more effective and efficient government achieved through coordination and cooperation. It is about a government that works for us.
We are fortunate to live in a nation where politics need not be considered in our daily life. However, each of us depends on a public infrastructure created and maintained by our governments with our taxes.
In Johnson County, city and county government spend nearly $2 billion annually to maintain and build our infrastructure. Are there better cheaper ways for our 21 governments to provide essential service? Yes.
County government has the largest budget and is the only local government to serve the entire community. Within local government, is the county the most suitable institution to bring together the whole community? Yes.
Do the taxpayers deserve a county that looks our for their interests by cooperatively coordinating with our other governments to give them the most for their tax dollar? We do.
The position of County Chairman was created to define a better future where our local governments can cooperate and coordinate to save tax money and deliver great services. It was created to help bring our community together and set goals to ensure a future of opportunity and prosperity.
We need a County Chairman who can cooperatively bring together the independently acting private and government interests and help create the future we need and can afford.
